I think there is something about pain, something about living through enough, that makes you feel proud of your cynicism. The bitter edge, quiet distrust, and hard exterior are all things that feel earned, they feel reliable. And their neither. They weren’t earned, because you weren’t ever exhausting your effort or opening your heart in hopes of one day being a wary and withdrawn cynic. In fact, they’re the wholly unacceptable consolation prizes that we, for some reason, accept after every heartbreak. They aren’t reliable either, unless you’re counting on furthering the cycle.

If you have gotten hard, hateful, bitter, or cynical then try being soft again. I’m gonna.
